Stewardship Before Fundraising
Brian Taef · July 27, 2026

Trust is earned. Stewardship is how we intend to earn it.
Over the past two decades, I've had the privilege of serving in politics, public policy, advocacy, and now nonprofit leadership. During that time, I've sat across the table from donors, campaign leaders, elected officials, and nonprofit executives. I've watched organizations succeed, and I've watched others lose the confidence of the very people who believed in them.
One thing has always been consistent.
The people making the largest investments ask questions. They ask how resources will be used. They want updates. They expect accountability. They want to understand the strategy before they decide to support it.
And they should. That isn't a lack of trust. That's responsible stewardship.
But over the years, I noticed something that never sat right with me. Too often, that level of transparency is reserved for a select few. The people writing the largest checks receive detailed reports, regular updates, and personal conversations. Everyone else receives another fundraising email.
I don't believe that's how a movement should be built.
At We Are Cyrus, we intend to build something different.
Whether someone contributes $25 or $25,000, they are placing the exact same thing in our hands. Their trust.
And I believe that trust deserves the same respect regardless of the size of the contribution. This organization will never measure a person's value by the size of their gift. The sacrifice of someone giving $25 from a week's paycheck deserves the same respect as someone capable of making a much larger contribution.
Both are choosing to believe in this mission. Both deserve honest communication. Both deserve transparency. Both deserve responsible leadership. Most importantly, both deserve to know that what they entrusted to us is advancing the mission they believe in.
That is why I want to make a commitment before We Are Cyrus ever launches a major fundraising campaign.
Twice each year, we will publish a public Stewardship Report. Not because the law requires it. Because the people who place their trust in us deserve it.
We'll share what we've accomplished. We'll explain where resources were invested. We'll communicate what we've learned. We'll discuss where we're going next.
Not every receipt. Not every operational detail. But enough that every supporter can clearly understand how their trust is being stewarded.
Building a national civic movement isn't free. There are people dedicating their lives to this mission. There are legal requirements, technology, travel, communications, educational initiatives, grassroots organizing, and countless responsibilities that happen long before anyone sees the finished product.
None of that happens by accident. And none of it should happen without accountability.
Every dollar entrusted to We Are Cyrus should answer one simple question:
Did it move the mission forward?
If the answer is no, we shouldn't spend it. If the answer is yes, we should be able to explain why.
That is the standard I expect from myself. It is the standard I expect from our leadership. And it is the standard I hope will define this organization long after I am gone.
We Are Cyrus is not being built for one election. It is not being built for one administration. It is not being built around one personality.
It is being built to become a permanent civic institution for American Iranians and for everyone who believes that freedom, responsible citizenship, and principled leadership are worth investing in.
Institutions are not sustained by fundraising alone. They are sustained by trust. Trust is earned through consistency. Through humility. Through accountability. Through stewardship.
Will we make mistakes? Of course we will. We're human. But when we do, we'll own them, we'll learn from them, and we'll continue moving forward with honesty and integrity.
Because perfection has never been the goal. Faithfulness has.
Our greatest asset will never be our bank account. It will be the trust placed in our hands.
Everything we build will be measured against one simple question:
Did we honor that trust?
If the answer is yes, we will keep building. If the answer is ever no, then nothing else we've accomplished will matter until we make it right.
That is my commitment to you.
And, by God's grace, I hope it remains the commitment of We Are Cyrus for generations to come.
